Rigathi Gachagua Attacked During Limuru Funeral
Incident Details
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has recounted a harrowing experience during a funeral in Limuru on Thursday. Speaking through an official statement, Gachagua revealed that a group of armed attackers targeted him and mourners at the service, disrupting the somber occasion.
Attack on Mourners
According to Gachagua, the attackers were armed with stones, iron bars, sticks, and machetes. They stormed the gathering, randomly assaulting mourners, including children. A specific group reportedly followed Gachagua to his car, damaging it with stones and iron bars as he attempted to leave. “We literally drove out of the venue under a hail of rocks,” he said.
The chaos also interrupted the proceedings, forcing mourners, including the bereaved family, to flee for safety. Several people were critically injured, with photos from the scene showing overturned chairs and widespread disarray.
Security Concerns
Gachagua linked the incident to the recent withdrawal of his government-provided security, which he claims left him vulnerable. He expressed disappointment, stating, “It now looks like the decision to withdraw my security was to leave me exposed to the kind of attack we witnessed today.”
Despite the ordeal, Gachagua reassured the public that such incidents would not deter him from supporting Kenyans in their times of need. “We will not be scared away,” he emphasized.
Allegations of Complicity
The former deputy president accused the state of complicity in the attack, describing the situation as “a major low for the state.” He expressed sympathy for the grieving family, who were forced to endure such violence during their time of mourning.
Reactions and Assurance
Kiambu Senator Karung’o Thangwa, a close ally of Gachagua, dismissed fears of injuries to the former DP. In a statement, Thangwa claimed the attack was an assassination attempt, adding, “The people’s Deputy President is safe. Thank you, people of Limuru, for ensuring our safety.”
Political Tensions
The attack comes amid escalating tensions between Gachagua and President William Ruto. Gachagua has criticized the president’s leadership, particularly over contentious deals such as those involving the Adani Group. He revealed that his advice on the matter was dismissed, further straining their relationship.
Reflecting on his time in government, Gachagua lamented being portrayed as an opponent of state projects whenever he raised concerns. “Nobody can tell the president this is not right,” he remarked.
